This eBook is based on over 20 years of medical and dental research. Dr. Harold Katz wrote this ebook and he is one of the world’s foremost experts on the subject of bad breath or halitosis and is the founder of the California Breath Clinics. It is very easy to read. You will learn about the numerous causes of bad breath and more importantly, the most effective bad breath treatment that is available. You will learn many things that will definitely shock you such as:

-Most major commercial mouthwashes contain more alcohol than a six-pack of beer. This is bad because alcohol will give you a dry mouth which is one of the leading causes of bad breath.

-Most major commercial toothpastes contain a ‘soap’ that dries out your mouth.

-Most commercial oral care products use a minty scent to stop your bad breath. But when the scent goes away in about 15 minutes, your bad breath comes back with a vengeance!

Important Things You Need To Know About Bad Breath

Extensive medical research has determined the cause of bad breath is the anaerobic bacteria that live beneath the surface of your tongue, in the throat, and on tonsils. These bacteria are supposed to be there. Humans need them to function properly. They assist humans in digestion by breaking down proteins found in specific foods, mucus or phlegm, blood, and in diseased or “broken-down” oral tissue. However, under certain conditions, these bacteria start to break down proteins at a very high rate. Proteins are made up of Amino Acids. Two of the Amino Acids (Cysteine and Methionine) are dense with sulfur which is found in bad breath and taste disorders. During this process of breaking down these proteins, they extract sulfur from the amino acids, and produce Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) such as Methyl Mercaptan (which smells like dirty socks) and Hydrogen Sulfide (which smells like rotten eggs).

So What Should You Do To Eliminate Bad Breath?

These bacteria are anaerobic, which means without the presence of oxygen. They breed by the billions deep within the fibers (papillae) of the tongue because in normal circumstances, oxygen cannot penetrate beneath the surface of the tongue. Therefore, eliminating bad breath is as simple as introducing oxygen to the anaerobic environment of the bacteria that produce VSCs. I had really awful breath until I discovered the best bad breath treatment on the market. That treatment is the TheraBreath line of products. The reason why they work so well is that they contain the active ingredient Oxyd-VIII. This ingredient adds oxygen to the oral environment which prevents the anaerobic bacteria from creating the odorous sulfide and Mercaptan compounds that are the cause of halitosis. The end result is the formation of a “Sulfate”, which has no odor or taste.

Bad breath is a condition that I had for a long time. It was embarrassing and wrecked my social life. I used every bad breath treatment that you could name. I eliminated sugar and dairy products from my diet, drank eight glasses of water a day, brushed, flossed, and scraped my tongue on a regular basis, and used all of the major commercial mouthwashes. I also tried gargling with warm salt water, chewing on parsley, wintergreen, cardamom seeds, and eucalyptus leaves, and eating sugarless yogurt. Unfortunately, these bad breath treatments did not work for me. Luckily, a very good friend of mine heard about the problems that I was having with my breath and decided to help me out. So he did some research and found a line of products that would transform my life forever. After taking these products, I was able to talk to people without making them sick to their stomach and embarrassing myself. The products that I took were the TheraBreath line of oral care formulas. This product line includes a mouthwash (oral rinse), toothpaste, breath spray, concentrated powerdrops, ZOX breath mints, oxygenating chewing gum, AktivOxigen tablets, and Nasal Sinus Drops, all designed to attack the root of the problem throughout the day with the utmost of convenience. Some breath-refreshing systems rely solely on mouthwash to fight bad breath. Using these formulas will not only give you clean, fresh breath, but they also contain the best ingredients available to prevent tooth decay, and keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy. I successfully eliminated my bad breath by first using the Therabreath Starter Kit and working my way up from there. You can order a FREE trial of these Therabreath products by clicking here.

Click Here For More Information About Therabreath Products!

7 Reasons You Should Use TheraBreath Oral Care Products

1. Anaerobic sulfur producing bacteria is the cause of bad breath. You can combat anaerobic bacteria with oxygen. Therabreath products contain the active ingredient OXYD-8. It is stabilized and generates oxidizing power as soon as it enters your mouth. This stabilization process allows TheraBreath to have up to a 3 year shelf-life. When any TheraBreath product enters your mouth, a chemical reaction takes place, which allows plenty of active oxygenation to take place each and every time you use it. TheraBreath products will not only eliminate bacterially produced odors, but they will also destroy all types of food odors (garlic, onions, etc.) and even morning breath.

2. TheraBreath toothpaste does not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a harsh detergent). You want to avoid SLS because it will dry out your mouth which will create an optimal environment for the bad breath bacteria to produce volatile sulfur compounds. SLS has also been linked to the production of painful and annoying canker sores. Unfortunately, most commercial toothpaste and mouthwash manufacturers use SLS which is a soap that they put in toothpaste and other cleansers for the sole purpose of making it foam. People are conditioned to believe that more bubbles means that you will be cleaner. However, this is simply not true.

3. Highly concentrated Whole Leaf Aloe Vera has been added to Therabreath toothpaste. Recent research in Asia has shown that Aloe Vera boosts the body’s ability to create collagen. This strengthens weak and swollen gums which allows them to heal more quickly. This is important because bleeding gums provide a protein “food source” to the bacteria that create bad breath.

4. Therabreath toothpaste does not contain Saccharin. Saccharin has been shown to be carcinogenic in lab animals and the state of California has recently published a long term study on its negative effects. For some individuals, Saccharin can also create a bitter aftertaste because of one of the chemical compounds produced during Saccharin’s chemical breakdown.

5. Therabreath toothpaste is actually a gel. Gels are much smaller molecules than pastes which allows them to penetrate deeper below the surface of the tongue. TheraBreath toothpaste also contains premiere tooth polishing and whitening agents which will keep your smile white and brilliant, but without the damaging abrasives. They are animal cruelty-free and are not harmful to the environment.

6. TheraBreath ToothGel also contains Sodium Fluoride which fights decay. Fluoride has also been shown to be an effective de-sensitizing agent. Some of the other anti-halitosis systems do not contain any Fluoride at all. Before you purchase any anti-halitosis product, make sure to ask if it contains Fluoride.

7. Almost all commercial mouthwashes contain alcohol which can make your mouth drier and your breath smell worse. This will negate the benefits of the oxidation process. The TheraBreath Mouthwash (Oral Rinse) does not contain alcohol and was designed to replace all of those products that make your mouth dry.

Bad breath cannot be cured. There is no such thing as a one time bad breath treatment. Because the bacteria are always there (and are part of the natural flora of bacteria that you need to start off the digestive process), you cannot eliminate them permanently. The only way to effectively stop these bacteria from producing sulfur odours is to use an OXYD-8 based product such as Therabreath. No other compounds will perform this action. The bacteria reproduce every 10-12 hours and that is why the treatment must be used throughout the day. After several months, there is a residual effect, whereby the medication has a longer lasting feeling. Some people are then able to get by with performing the procedure only twice daily. However, for the best results, most people perform the procedures three times daily.

What Causes Bad Breath Symptoms

Bad breath is caused by Anaerobic Sulfur Producing Bacteria which normally live WITHIN the surface of the tongue and in the throat. These bacteria are supposed to be there, because they assist humans in digestion by breaking down proteins found in specific foods, mucous or phlegm, blood, and in diseased or “broken-down” oral tissue. Under certain conditions, these bacteria start to break down proteins at a very high rate. Proteins are made up of Amino Acids. Two of the Amino Acids (Cysteine and Methionine) are dense with sulfur.

When these “beneficial” bacteria come into contact with these compounds, the odorous and “lousy-tasting” sulfur compounds are released from the back of the tongue and throat, as Hydrogen Sulfide, Methyl Mercaptan, and other odorous and bad tasting compounds. These “problem” compounds are often referred to as volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), where volatile means Vaporous and Effervescent, two adjectives which accurately describe their ability to offend other people instantly.

Let me explain a very important fact about these “bugs”. They are not “bad guys” – they are not infectious. Everyone in the world has the same group of bacteria in their mouth. You cannot “catch” bad breath from someone else – even by kissing. Since they are part of our normal oral flora, you cannot permanently remove them from your mouth – not by tongue scraping, not by antibiotics, and not by rinses which claim to “lift the bacteria off your tongue”. The only scientifically proven and clinically effective method of halting Halitosis is by attacking the bacteria’s ability to produce VSC and by converting the VSC into non-odorous and non-tasting organic salts.

Speaking about bacteria, there is one other fact that you must understand about these bacteria. They are classified as “Anaerobic” – which literally means “Without Oxygen”. They thrive in an environment where Oxygen is NOT present. That is why they DO NOT LIVE ON THE SURFACE OF YOUR TONGUE! They live in between the papillae (fibers) that make up your tongue!

These sulfur compounds are actually by-products of anaerobic bacteria (Fusobacterium and Actinomyces, among others). Everyone needs these bacteria, because they assist the digestion process. But, unfortunately, for some, as yet undetermined reason these particular bacteria are found in higher numbers in those anguished by Bad Breath. (Various theories attribute this to hormonal changes, a history of medications, usually antibiotics or sulfa drugs-which create an imbalance of oral bacteria, or even Genetics-these disorders appear to run in some families.) We do know however, that it seems to be evenly split between men and women.

Conditions under which the problem becomes worse:

Dry Mouth
Although some cases of dry mouth are naturally occurring, most cases are caused by one of these factors; prescription medications (usually prescribed for high blood pressure or depression) antihistamines, and adult beverages, with alcohol in them.

When your mouth is dryer, you have less Saliva. Saliva naturally contains Oxygen, which keeps your mouth healthy and fresh. These bacteria are anaerobic, which simply means that they will thrive and make more sulfur in the presence of little or no oxygen. Thus if you have less Saliva, you have less oxygen, thereby creating an anaerobic environment, perfect for the bacteria to produce more of these odorous and sour/bitter compounds. For people with Dry Mouth, products such as ZOX Breath Fresheners can help greatly.

Post-Nasal Drip
We know that proteins contain amino acids, which in turn contain sulfur compounds (see text above). When a person has a post nasal drip, mucus drains and coats the back of the tongue and throat, exactly where bacteria live (see diagram above). Since mucus is made up of interlinked strands of protein, the bacteria have a field day, breaking down these proteins into odorous and sour tasting sulfur type compounds. Strong Antihistamines don’t help, because the drying effect of the antihistamines also creates a problem. The only method of ending the odor and taste are to use oxygen based oral products. Many people with post nasal drip have claimed great success after using the Nasal-Sinus Drops.

What About The Sinuses?
Many people mistakenly believe that they can get rid of bad breath following sinus surgery. First of all, these anaerobic bacteria cannot live in the sinuses. When someone has a sinus infection, one of the common symptoms are intense sinus headaches, caused by the pressure from the infection in the sinus. If you don’t have these powerful headaches, you probably don’t have a sinus problem. The fact is that once someone has an elevated amount of these anaerobic bacteria, they will create the problem from any protein source, including mucous, phlegm, etc, which drain down the back of your throat into the area where these bacteria live.

High Protein Foods
These bacteria love those proteins, and certain foods are packed with them:

Milk and Cheese and most other dairy products. (The fat content does not matter.) If you are lactose intolerant, do not eat or drink these products! Since your system cannot digest them properly, they are available to the bacteria for an extended period of time. A research article from the Los Angeles Times (November 1996) on lactose intolerance showed that nearly 67% of all Americans can be classified as “Lactose Intolerant”. This is due to the fact that in a diverse population such as we have here, there is a predilection for Asians, Hispanics, and African-Americans to be lactose intolerant.

Fish are high in proteins. As many people eat a high fish diet, logically they make the problem worse.

Coffee with caffeine (and even without) contains high levels of acids which cause the bacteria to reproduce more rapidly and create a bitter taste for many people. Virtually any acidic type of food will do this.

Update Friday, May 24th, 2013:

TheraBreath is a very “user-friendly” anti-halitosis system. It features a mouthwash (oral rinse), toothpaste, breath spray, concentrated powerdrops, ZOX breath mints, oxygenating chewing gum, AktivOxigen tablets, and Nasal Sinus Drops, all designed to attack the root of the problem throughout the day with the utmost of convenience. Most people already know that they have bad breath because of the disgusted look that others give them while they are talking to each other. This condition can cause anyone to become desperate looking for a cure for halitosis that will be their salvation. As long as the bad breath or halitosis did not result from a medical problem, you should not have too much difficulty finding the proper way to get rid of your halitosis. Some of the easier ways of curing bad breath include adjusting your diet and following a healthy oral hygiene routine on a regular basis.

Sometimes it is easier to understand how to get rid of a problem such as bad breath if you know what causes it in the first place. The most common cause of halitosis is the bacteria in your mouth. If food gets stuck between your teeth after you are finished with a meal, the oral bacteria will feed on this leftover food which will cause the release of sulfur which is responsible for the bad smell in your mouth.

Food that is high in protein is dense with sulfur. This is why many people who are on a high protein diet are unfortunately burdened with disgusting breath. However, people who eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables are less likely to have this problem since this diet will increase their flow of saliva. The saliva will wash away the food and bacteria that is ruining your breath and give you better smelling breath.

If your bad breath does not result from gastric disorders or any other medical condition, then you will not have a hard time finding the correct way to eliminate your condition. A simple cure for halitosis that might work is to follow the rules for proper oral hygiene on a regular basis.

You can start by buying a good toothbrush and dental floss. To get rid of any food remnants and bacteria, you will have to brush your teeth and floss after every meal. You should also consider purchasing a good mouthwash. The mouthwash will be effective in removing some of the odor-causing bacteria. However, you should be careful to not purchase a mouthwash that contains alcohol because it can dry your mouth out which will result in the production of even more sulfur-producing bacteria.

The bacteria that feeds on the leftover food found between your teeth can also be found on your tongue. This is why you should also brush your tongue regularly. This will help eliminate some of the leftover food and bacteria found on your tongue which will go a long way towards freshening your breath up.

Smoking can cause you to have dry mouth. Having a dry mouth means that you will produce less saliva which is vital in removing bacteria and leftover food. This is why many people recommend quitting smoking if you have disgusting breath. This is much cheaper than having to pay for a commercial bad breath treatment. Smoking can not only wreck your breath it can also make your clothes and hair smell pretty bad as well. You can do yourself and your family and friends a big favor by giving up smoking.

Consuming large amounts of alcohol can also result in halitosis. The alcohol can cause you to have dry mouth. Even if you follow a proper daily dental routine and use commercial breath fresheners to mask the odor, drinking too much alcohol can negate all of the positive effects of any precautions you may take.

Foods That Are The Causes Of Bad Breath

Of course, everyone knows that Onions and Garlic will create bad breath. But do you know why? It’s because the odorous molecules in onions and garlic are actually sulfur compounds themselves, called Mercaptans. (Sulfur is nature’s way of creating odors.) You’re all familiar with the skunk. Its odor is created as a defense and/or attack mechanism. Skunk odor is made up of sulfur compounds (skatoles, etc.) which are natural sulfur compounds.

Food, if it sits out too long will spoil. That action is due to anaerobic bacteria breaking down proteins in that particular food. In milk, the odor of sour milk is caused by relatives of the bugs that create bad breath, when they break down proteins in milk (and all dairy foods). A reaction takes place where ‘the bad breath bugs’ extract sulfur compounds from the amino acids in these proteins. Specifically, the amino acid Cysteine is converted to Hydrogen Sulfide (the rotten egg smell) and Methionine becomes Methyl Mercaptan (which smells like a cross between old socks and garlic.) The same analogy applies to meat if it sits out too long. There are 4 categories of foods that will result in an increase of sulfur production because these categories have a stimulating affect on the bacteria:

1. Drying Agents
2. Dense Protein Foods
3. Sugars
4. Acids

Drying Agents:
The most common drying agent in food is Alcohol. Alcohol of course is the basis of all “adult” beverages such as Beer, Wine, and Hard liquor. It is also used, unfortunately in mouthwash, where it only makes the problem worse.

Alcohol is a drying agent, known chemically as a desiccant. It is used quite often in laboratories to “dry out” hard to reach areas in test tubes and beakers. The same end result takes place in the oral cavity.

Although cigarettes are not really food, smoking is probably the quickest way to dry out your mouth, with alcohol the second. If you smoke, you are bound to have bad breath!

Dense Protein Foods:
Dairy foods are notorious for creating bad breath. An article in the Los Angeles Times once noted that over 50% of the population in Southern California was Lactose Intolerant which is the inability to digest significant amounts of lactose, the predominant sugar of milk. With regards to bad breath, it has been found that these people (numbering in the tens of millions) end up with MORE dense proteins available as ‘bad breath fuel‘ for the bacteria than those who have no problem with dairy foods (milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc.) The end result is a buildup of amino acids, which are easily converted into volatile sulfur compounds by the anaerobic bacteria found within the surface of your tongue and throat.

To a lesser extent, there are people who have the same problem with other dense protein foods such as: Beef, Chicken, Fish.

Another problem, thankfully rare, has to do with people who have an inability to break down certain proteins found in beans. This condition is called TMA (Trimethylaminuria) and is sometimes known as the “Fish Odor Syndrome”, because the odor produced is similar to decaying fish. The odor consists of sulfur compounds, plus nitrogen compounds (amines). People with this condition must abstain from beans and other dense protein foods.

Sugars:
Wouldn’t it be great if we could get rid of bad breath by chewing on M&Ms? Or what if the cure for bad breath were Hershey Kisses?

That’s what the makers of ALTOIDS would have you believe. Altoids, and other products of the same ilk, are trying to fool the public into believing that a strong “good” taste in your mouth is equivalent to the “goodness” of your breath. It is so anti-science, as to be absurd. If you think about it for a minute, it doesn’t even make sense.

By using concentrated MINT flavorings, your taste buds pick up MINT as a a taste. However, ALTOIDS, contains 2 types of sugar, which are Fuel for the bacteria to reproduce and create more sulfur compounds. In addition, and here’s the frightening part, other bacteria can take the sugars and produce glycan strands, which in turn end up causing thick layers of plaque on your enamel and around your gums. This leads to tooth decay and gum disease – and of course worse Breath than when you started.

But, since you can’t smell your own breath, you just go merrily along with that great strong mint taste in your mouth, while others close to you are backing away – backing away from your increased bad breath, decayed teeth, and gross swollen, bleeding gums!

Stay away from candies, mints, and chewing gum if they contain sugar. As an alternative, you can use TheraBreath Oxygenating Chewing Gum. It releases Oxygen molecules directly in your mouth and also contains the antibacterial agent, Zinc Gluconate (found in many cold medications). In addition, as a sweetening agent we chose Xylitol, which is a natural ANTI-DECAY compound (Not SUGAR!)

Acidic Foods
Acidic foods are a problem as you’ll read below. Some foods you should watch out for are:

Coffee – both decaf and regular have acids (Tea is OK)
Tomato Juice

Citrus Juices:
Orange Juice
Pineapple Juice
Grapefruit Juice

pH is a term used to describe the acidity of the environment. (see table) The oral cavity has a normal pH of 6.5 (7 is neutral) which is in the acid range.

We know that acids make the bacteria reproduce much faster. In order to decrease the production of odorous sulfur compounds, we need to neutralize the acid environment. TheraBreath products are the only ones to be pH balanced in such a manner to do this most effectively. That is why TheraBreath products do not leave a strange aftertaste like other bad breath treatment products.

Update January 21, 2013:

TheraBreath is a very “user-friendly” anti-halitosis system.

The First Step In Finding The Proper Remedies For Bad Breath Is Knowing The Root Cause

Nothing is more embarrassing than a breath smelling like you’ve just pigged out on garbage. The good news is this problem can be treated – commercial products and home remedies for bad breath abound. Will it also help to know that you are not alone? Almost everyone is plagued with this problem – some are more serious than the others – and all are trying to find the ultimate remedies for bad breath that will end all the humiliation once and for all.

Contrary to what people believe, you can not smell your own bad breath – only those who are unfortunate enough to have a whiff of your stinky breath can tell you if you do have it. Certainly being told that you have bad breath is mortifying and drives one to go madly looking for the best cures for bad breath that are available.

Halitosis basically starts in the mouth where all kinds of oral bacteria thrive at different intensities everyday due to different factors. Don’t you notice how your breath stinks in the morning? For one, bad breath can be a bad side effect of a dry mouth, stress or fasting. Since the functions of the mouth are inactive while we are sleeping, meaning there is not enough saliva to wash bacteria out, bacterial activity goes into overdrive, leaving a nasty odor when we wake up.

Saliva stimulation is basically what chewing gum does. Although the minty smell can hide the bad odor a bit, it is the chewing activity which stimulates saliva flow that really works its powers in proving a bad breath solution. A more natural cure for bad breath that works the same as a chewing gum is placing a drop of lemon juice at the tip of your tongue.

And although bad breath may go away after we eat something, it is also the foods we eat that leave a nasty effect on our breath. Onions, cheese or garlic can make breath stink more than we want to. Drinking and smoking are culprits too. This is because some particles are left in the hard-to-reach places of the tongue and there bacteria wreaks havoc – releasing the sulfur gases that make the foulest smell.

That is why one major routine in oral care should be scraping the tongue off of these breeding spots for bacteria. A tongue scraper is a good natural cure for bad breath. If you do not have one, you can gently but effectively use the bristles of your toothbrush or a spoon to get these particles off.

However, that stinky odor from your mouth may have come from your nose too. Nasal drips are an effect of colds, allergies or hormonal changes. Mucus from the nose goes down to the back of the tongue where it can also breed bacteria that releases the foulest smell.

A bad breath solution is always within reach. Mouthwashes, breath mints and sprays fill the supermarket shelves along with oral hygiene products. If you’re more into the organic solutions, home remedies to treat bad breath could offer relief from the stench. Citrus fruits stimulate saliva flow which prevents odor-causing enzymes from doing their literally stinky job. A baking soda bad breath solution also works wonders on getting rid of bad breath. Washing your mouth with this solution alters its pH, making it unfavorable for bacteria to thrive.

Having bad breath really leaves a negative impression on others that is why its important to always make sure that your breath is smelling fresh. Of course maintaining an oral hygiene is always a good bad breath remedy.

Avocado is one of the lesser known of the bad breath remedies. However, it has been an effective treatment for halitosis for many people with this condition. Eating avocado can help many people ease the chronic bad breath that ails them and everybody around them, but do not eat too much avocado. It is not difficult to get rid of bad breath with avocado and it is easily found in the produce aisle of any grocery store in your local community.

Reduce Protein Intake

Proteins are one of the culprits when it comes to chronic bad breath.

What Are The Best Cures For Bad Breath And Other Questions?

Bad breath or halitosis is a condition in which a person’s breath reeks so much that it is offensive and embarrassing. While everyone gets bad breath once in a while, there are some people who have it so bad that simple cures for bad breath don’t do much to cure it. This problem is caused by the activity of bacteria mostly found in the hard-to-reach places of the tongue. These bacteria feast on the food particles and plaque in the area and release sulfur compounds in the process. This is what is causing all that odor.

But there is still so much to be known about this condition and the right information can certainly lead to the right bad breath treatment. Here are some frequent questions people ask about halitosis:

Is it true that bad breath comes from the stomach?

In some cases, yes. Digestive halitosis is an effect of the digestive enzymes continuously working inside our stomach even if there’s no food to digest. The enzymes effecting the stomach lining give out a stench that resembles rotten food which comes out through our breath. It is not hard to eliminate digestive halitosis though since it disappears as soon as food fills the stomach.

Sometimes having heartburn can also cause your breath to smell. Acid reflux and halitosis are somewhat related in a sense that acid that should normally flow down the stomach, flows back up the esophagus. This gets more bacteria food into the throat and thus, causes bad breath.

What does smoking have to do with halitosis?

When you smoke, your mouth dries and this makes it even more a haven for bacteria. A dry mouth lacks saliva which acts as a natural mouthwash that is supposed to wash away the bacteria and their wastes.

Does eating certain foods cause bad breath?

There are some food that are notorious for causing your breath to stink. Foods like onions and garlic have odorous molecules that can get into our system and stick in the lungs. As we breath out, we give off this offensive smell.

As we know, acid reflux and halitosis are related and preventing certain food that causes acid reflux like caffeine, chocolate or any greasy meal will also help in eliminating bad breath.

What are the possible remedies for this problem?

Getting rid of bad breath basically calls for the elimination of the odor-causing bacteria. We must do all we can to prevent them from thriving inside the most common areas of growth – like the mouth.

The simplest and most natural cure for bad breath is keeping a good oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing and tongue cleaning keeps the teeth, gum and tongue free from plaque that serve as food for bacteria. A clean mouth means lesser chances of breathing out a bad stench.

There are also home remedies for bad breath that you can try. For one, you can try chewing on parsley and other “green” vegetables. The chlorophyll present in these plants serves as a natural deodorizer, limiting the development of bad breath.

Use citrus fruits as home remedies to treat bad breath. These fruits stimulate saliva flow – nature’s natural mouthwash – and its acidity kills most of the oral bacteria. Aside from that they also serve as refreshing alternatives to mouthwashes – their tangy taste gives breath a fresh scent.

But you must also know that there is no number one bad breath solution. Treating bad breath takes a combination of these treatment methods to holistically make sure that no bacteria thrive where it can give off a stench.

Many people who have disgusting breath desperately want to learn how to get rid of bad breath. One of the first recommendations that they probably get is to practice good oral hygiene. This means using a toothbrush, dental floss, and a tongue scraper on a daily basis. This bad breath remedy might work for some people but other people will have to look for other bad breath remedies. Some people may not realize this but changing their diet can also be an effective cure for halitosis. This works because the bacteria in your body can lead to smelly breath and by changing your diet you can reduce the number of bad breath-causing bacteria.

One effective halitosis treatment is to add sugarless yogurt to your diet. A Japanese medical study showed that people who ate sugarless yogurt had lower hydrogen sulfide levels. This is important because hydrogen sulfide is one of the Volatile Sulfur Compounds (VSCs) that causes bad breath. What happens is that the yogurt contains live bacteria cultures, such as lactobacillus, that is able to reduce the levels of bad breath-causing bacteria.

You can determine how to get rid of bad breath by finding the source of the odor and finding a halitosis cure that will eliminate it. Some of the causes of bad breath are gum disease and gingivitis. If your disgusting breath is caused by unhealthy gums, you can cure halitosis by consuming more Vitamin C. Medical studies have proven that Vitamin C is effective at preventing gum disease and will also speed up the healing process. Fortunately, Vitamin C can be found in a variety of foods such as kiwi, pineapple, papaya, strawberries, red peppers, cabbage, and oranges. Vitamin C also makes your oral environment a difficult place for bad breath causing bacteria to reproduce.

Another cause of halitosis is a digestive system that is not functioning properly. If you have any problems with your digestive system, food will not be digested fully. This will lead to the creation of toxins that will be found in your stomach, intestines, and mouth. One of the symptoms of these toxins is a white coating on your tongue that you will discover when you wake up in the morning. These toxins have a foul smell which will get into your lungs. Then when you exhale people will be able to get a whiff of your bad breath.

One way to eliminate these toxins and cure your halitosis is to have regular bowel movements. You can increase your number of bowel movements by eating foods that are rich in fiber. Foods that are rich in fiber include whole grain breads and cereals and whole fruits and vegetables such as peaches, apples, and potatoes. There are also fiber supplements available on the market that will do a good job of helping food move through the digestive system.

A good source of fiber is alfalfa which also happens to contain chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has been proven to be an effective halitosis treatment that will eliminate the odors from the digestive system. The next time you go out to dinner you might notice some parsley on your plate. Parsley is rich in chlorophyll and if you chew on it after your meal your breath will smell much nicer.

Learning how to get rid of bad breath does not have to be difficult. There are many simple bad breath remedies that will leave you with much fresher breath.

One Cause Of Bad Breath Is Dry Mouth

Having enough saliva is a very important part of oral health. Saliva provides three important functions:

1. Provides enzymes to help with digestion of food
2. Provides a method to stabilize the pH (keep the acid levels in check)
3. Provides high levels of oxygen in order to keep oral tissues healthy and fresh.

If you have dry mouth (Xerostomia), then you naturally have less saliva and less saliva means less oxygen. If there is less oxygen available in the oral environment you have an anaerobic environment, which is perfect for these sulfur-producing bacteria. In essence, the bacteria are now capable of making high levels of sulfur gases, which in turn make the breath and taste worse.

There is an all natural Breath Mint, ZOX Breath Fresheners, designed to stimulate saliva flow AND freshen your breath. Containing no sugar, aspartame, or saccharin, this breath lozenge uses its patented zinc/oxygen/xylitol formula to naturally stimulate the salivary glands to produce an oxygen-rich type of saliva, which works extremely well with our Stabilized Chlorine Dioxide oral rinse and oral gel in order to restrict the production of the foul-smelling and tasting sulfide and mercaptan compounds.

It is also true that some tongue formations are also more conducive to dry mouth than others. Generally, the rougher one’s tongue, the more likely they are to have a bad breath problem. This is connected to the belief by some that “bad breath” can be an inherited trait. Truthfully, one cannot inherit the bacteria of bad breath, but one can inherit a specific “shape or geography” of tongue, just as one would inherit a parent’s eye color, hair color, height, and ear shape.

In the graphic on this page, one sees a deep groove going down the middle of the tongue; this is known as a “fissured” tongue and it may lead to a great deal of the anaerobic bacteria breeding at the bottom of this fissure, because Oxygen cannot get to the bottom of the fissure (another reason why tongue scraping without oxidizing products, is a waste of time.)

Some people may have a condition known as “hairy tongue”, which again describes the fibers that make up the tongue (papillae), being slightly longer than the norm. The longer the papillae, the more rough the appearance of the tongue and of course the better to trap the sulfur producing bacteria.

Once the tongue becomes very dry, or if the tongue becomes abused by extra hard scraping or brushing, the outer layer becomes very sensitive. One prevalent condition among older people is “burning tongue syndrome”. It is common among both sexes, but slightly higher among women. That fact has caused some scientists to believe that there is a hormonal component to “burning tongue syndrome”. Many patients who are diabetic, may notice a burning of the tongue, once they become thirsty. It is important, when one has these types of symptoms, to stay away from oral rinses that may burn or make your mouth dry. The resulting pain is indescribably painful according to many of my patients.

The standard recommendation for Burning Tongue Syndrome and Dry Mouth is the following:

1. Stop using oral products which make your mouth dry and/or contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

2. Stop drinking citrus juices (tomato, orange, grapefruit, etc.)

3. Avoid coffee

4. Do not smoke

5. See your physician regarding possibility of Diabetes or Thyroid Problems

Daily Oral Regimen for Those who Have Burning Tongue Syndrome or Dry Mouth:

a. Coat tongue twice daily with TheraBreath ToothGel and let sit on tongue for 90 seconds.

b. Rinse with 1-2 capfuls of TheraBreath Oral Rinse for 90 seconds.

c. Drink 8 glasses of water per day.

d. Take Vitamin C on a daily basis as recommended on label.

Tonsils and Tonsiloliths:

(Those white-yellow globs that get stuck in your throat).

These bacteria can breed very easily in the back of the throat, and especially the tonsils (if you have them.) One important fact to remember: The bacteria never start off in the throat or tonsils. They only get there because the “bugs” originate on the back of the tongue – which contacts the throat & tonsils EVERY TIME you swallow. When someone has post nasal drip or allergies, it is possible to form little “white globs” – scientifically known as Tonsiloliths. They are a combination of sulfur compounds (produced by the bacteria) and mucous (from post nasal drip). Their smell (if you’ve checked them out) is very STRONG! Do not attempt to pick them out yourself – you’ll cause a lot of bleeding. Many dentists and physicians don’t know what they are – they are not food particles and it is not the sign of infection. Do not run out and have a tonsillectomy – because you will still have bad breath – because the bugs are still on the back of your tongue. (If you no longer have your tonsils, a similar reaction takes place if you have had a history of sore throats – your throat is much rougher).

Here’s what an increasing number of people with halitosis have done to solve this problem: There is a concentrated tablet, known as “AktivOxigen Tabs“, as an addition to the TheraBreath product line. When added to an 8 oz. bottle of water, the tablet will create a powerful Oxygenating solution which one can use as their mouthwash and gargle. People with tonsils, post nasal drip, or a white coating on their tongue have said that if they drink 4-5 capfuls of this solution, even their morning breath disappears! (It’s because the oxygenation attacks the bacteria and their odorous sulfur production on the very back of the tongue, throat and/or tonsils – which cannot be reached through any other method.) You can also make a double strength solution by adding 2 tablets to the 8 oz. bottle. AktivOxigen Tabs are easy to carry around and the resulting unflavored solution is also very refreshing!

TheraBreath Review – A Cure For Bad Breath That Works

The TheraBreath System and its products are based on the highly potent, but extremely safe Oxyd-VIII. The active ingredient Oxyd-VIII adds oxygen to the oral environment which prevents the anaerobic bacteria from creating the odorous sulfide and Mercaptan compounds that are the cause of bad breath. The end result is the formation of a “Sulfate”, which has no odor or taste.

Oxyd-VIII is a refined and properly pH balanced formula derived from a chemical used in water purification for over 100 years, Sodium Chlorite. These products have surpassed the “older” chemical known as “active” Chlorine Dioxide, to provide amazing results. I was successful in getting rid of my bad breath by first using the Therabreath Starter Kit and working my way up from there.

7 Reasons Why TheraBreath Is Superior To Any Other Group Of Products

One:
The active ingredient is Stabilized and generates Oxidizing Power as soon as it enters your mouth. This stabilization process allows TheraBreath to have up to a 3 year shelf-life.

[NOTE: Do not be confused by jealous competitors who state that TheraBreath does not contain active chlorine dioxide. Those statements are made to confuse the public. When any of the TheraBreath products enter your mouth, a chemical reaction takes place, which allows PLENTY of Fresh Oxidation every time you use it. That's why thousands of TheraBreath kits are sold every week in North America, Asia, Europe, South America, and Australia!]

Two:
TheraBreath has become the most “user-friendly” Anti-Halitosis System. Some breath-refreshing systems rely solely on mouthwash to fight bad breath.

Three:
TheraBreath ToothGel also contains Sodium Fluoride which fights decay. Fluoride has also been shown to be an effective desensitizing agent. Some of the other “Anti-Halitosis” systems do not contain any Fluoride at all. Before you buy any product that treats halitosis, you should find out if it contains any Fluoride.

Four:
Highly concentrated Whole Leaf Aloe Vera has been added to the TheraBreath toothpaste. Recent research in Asia has shown that Aloe Vera boosts the body’s ability to create collagen, which in turn strengthens weak and swollen gums to heal more quickly. (Bleeding gums provide a protein food source to the bacteria that create bad breath). No other “anti-Halitosis” system contains this form of Aloe Vera to fight this added problem.

Five:
The TheraBreath toothpaste or tooth”gel” does not contain Saccharin. (some other breath-refreshing products do). Saccharin has been shown to be carcinogenic in lab animals. Also, for some people, Saccharin creates a bitter aftertaste, due to one of the chemical compounds produced during Saccharin’s chemical breakdown.

Six:
TheraBreath ToothGel does not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a harsh detergent), which has been shown to be related to an increased incidence of canker sores. Almost all toothpastes contain this chemical. Research has shown that SLS should not be used by those who suffer from canker sores. And because the toothpaste does not contain SLS, (which will cause high levels of foam in the mouth), you will be better able to cleanse these odor-causing bacteria from your mouth by being able to brush longer.

Seven:
The TheraBreath Toothgel is actually a gel. Chemically speaking, gels are much smaller molecules than pastes, allowing deeper penetration below the tongue surface. TheraBreath toothpaste also contains premiere tooth polishing and whitening agents, in order to keep your smile white and brilliant, but without damaging abrasives. They are cruelty-free and are not harmful to the environment.

Clinical Studies on TheraBreath:

Presented on August 20, 1999 at UCLA – The University of California at Los Angeles – (at the 4th International Conference on Oral Malodor)

The Effects of Oxygenating TheraBreath Products on Bad Breath Patients – Testing of Saliva Production, and Reduction of VSC by Flame Chromatography and Halimeter Values.b

Bacterial production of Hydrogen Sulphide plays the main role in the ethiopathogenesis of bad breath, although there are several minor etiologic factors which also play a role. The anaerobic bacteria live in ideal areas, unreachable by oxygen, such as the back of the throat and tongue, interproximal areas of the teeth, periodontal pockets, and enlarged tonsilla. An oxygenating agent able to act in these regions could provide a benefit in eliminating halitosis.

The study monitored 25 subjects at the Department of Periodontology of the University Dental School. The subjects all suffered with the most common signs of bad breath and were evaluated both before and after the study using GCF, Halimeter (manufactured by Interscan) readings, and their level of saliva production by a Periotron 8000.

Results showed a statistically significant decrease in Halimeter readings and GCF values, while at the same time increasing their level of saliva production.

Conclusion: TheraBreath products (mouthwash (oral rinse), toothpaste, breath spray, concentrated powerdrops, ZOX breath mints, oxygenating chewing gum, AktivOxigen tablets, and Nasal Sinus Drops) are able to scientifically eliminate bad breath (halitosis), while at the same time helping to create more saliva for those who suffer with dry mouth.

Independent study conducted by the following Doctors: G. Acikgoz, I. Devrim, M. Aldikacti, A. Kayipmaz, G. Keles of the Ondokuz Mayis University Dental School, Samsun Turkey

Why does the OXYD-8 version of chlorine dioxide (used exclusively in TheraBreath) provide the longest and strongest relief?

TheraBreath is designed to produce copious amounts of “fresh, Potent” ClO2 “ON DEMAND” exactly where it’s needed – in the oral cavity, throat and tonsils. Consumption of “FREE” ClO2 leads to replenishment of more “FREE” ClO2 by a simple Le Chatelier shift to the right.

The demand for ClO2 is caused by the presence of the proteins and acids in the anaerobic bacteria and the volatile sulfur compounds they produce. This sensitive trigger mechanism in the OXYD-8 active ingredient in TheraBreath does not require stabilizing elements, bleach (as used in the ProFresh system) or buffers needed in other formulas. This allows TheraBreath to provide a much longer residual effect.
